Why We Love Junior Ranger Programs (And Think You Will Too)

I discovered last fall that I'm a little bit skeptical of our federal government.  I honestly had no idea until B & P were finishing their first National Parks Junior Ranger program and the park ranger handed them a very nice, high quality patch to commemorate their day of learning.  With all the talk of debt ceilings and excessive borrowing and financial cut-backs we hear about in the news, I was caught a little bit off-guard at the quality of a program we'd participated in for free.  We couldn't wait to visit our next park and get started on another one!

Junior Ranger programs

That first Junior Ranger program we did was at the Capulin Volcano National Monument in northeastern New Mexico.  I'll share more about that visit in the near future, but today want to tell you the two reasons we've fallen in love with the Junior Ranger programs.

1.  I already mentioned it, they're GOOD QUALITY learning programs.  I'm sure that would be important to anyone, but as a homeschool parent I tend to be a little critical of children's educational resources.  Too many times they're full of cartoon characters or pop culture references and not a lot of learning takes place in what's left of the blank space on a page.

Junior Ranger ProgramTo become a Junior Ranger, kids have to complete worksheets and tasks.  Both the programs we've done so far have had an option for younger and older kids.  Usually the younger kids are required to complete 3-4 pages/tasks, while the older kids maybe have to complete 5-7.  At Capulin Volcano pages included learning about how a volcano works, the geology of northern New Mexico, the flora and fauna of the area, and more.  A lot of them involve reading signs throughout the park and finding the information.  At that park they could receive an extra reward for completing the entire hike around the rim of the volcano.

Seriously, what can be better than seeing kids out in nature actively and excitedly learning about their surroundings?

2.  The Junior Ranger programs make kids feel special.  During our trip to Lake Mead last month, we stopped into the visitor's center to pick up our Junior Ranger books.  The retired volunteer park ranger almost jumped out of his skin with enthusiasm.  Both times we've done the program the rangers have given full attention to our boys while they explained the program and the requirements and got them excited for a day of learning.

Why does it seem like adults don't do that anymore...make time for kids?  Such a spirit-lifting experience for me to have someone else telling my kids how cool science and the outdoors can be! That volunteer ranger answered every single one of their questions and quizzed them and made sure they had not taken it lightly.  B & P just ate it up!

So what happens when kids have completed their activities and worksheets?  The ranger administers the Junior Park Ranger pledge.  Each kid repeats something like this,

"As a Junior Ranger, I promise to teach others about what I learned today,
explore other parks and historic sites,
and help preserve and protect these places so future generations can enjoy them."

Then they receive their badge and their patches and go on their merry little way...

More information:
Junior Ranger programs are available at
200+ national parks.

The program is free to participate-just ask a ranger at the park visitor center for information.

Many of the booklets and other information are available online
and are great resources for homeschool unit studies.

Your local state parks may have junior ranger programs as well.

Check Out a Ski Resort for Autumn Activities

This post includes affiliate links for resorts I have visited recently.

A blending of seasons has happened in the ski resort industry and vacation destinations that once opened for a short and specific time of the year have found a way to capitalize on their extraordinary terrain. Summers can be as busy as the best powder day, but spending time in the mountains on a crisp fall day is an experience not to be neglected.  Check out these activities for everyone in the family!

Autumn Activities

Hiking & Mountain Biking Getting up the mountain to explore is always the hardest part of hiking and mountain biking.  Save your energy and keep the kids in good spirits by riding the ski lift to the top. Have fun exploring before making your way back down the mountain.  For even more adventure, pack a picnic lunch to eat beside an alpine lake or high mountain meadow.

Horseback Riding For a different perspective, take the afternoon to ride a ridge atop the back of a well-trained horse.  The beauty of the autumn colors and the peacefulness nature brings are only enhanced when you’re up a little higher and letting the horse guide your way.  Many ski resorts collaborate with local ranches and farms to offer trail rides for every skill level.

ZipLine & Alpine Slides Adventure sports are becoming commonplace on vacation and completely make sense in venues already known for the thrill and adrenaline that comes from skiing. Taking advantage of already built-in steep turns and inclines, ziplines are making a debut as the warm weather activity all the cool kids want to try.  With the blur of vibrant autumn colors whirring around you and crisp fall winds whistling in your ear, speeding down the hill in a harness, on a slide, or in a wheeled sled is a family activity that treats each one of the senses.

ATV Tours If covering a lot of terrain, and getting a little dirty, is more your family’s style, booking an ATV tour will make everybody happy.  Whether on an organized tour or a self-guided adventure, the variety of equipment choices available make this a great option for every skill and interest level.  Independent teenagers can drive their own machine over bumps and through puddles while the younger ones double up with Mom or Dad.  The whole family can ride together safely buckled in a 4-seat vehicle and Grandma and Grandpa can even come along with a 6-seat rental.

Festivals Ski resorts, with their little bit of inherent rowdiness, are the best place to go for an Oktoberfest celebration.  With the sounds of live music echoing through the canyons and the taste of hearty German dishes to fill and warm the belly, the atmosphere will get even the staunchest summer die-hard excited for the changing of the seasons.  Plan to spend the day with children’s carnival activities, arts and crafts booths, and ethnic entertainment that will transport you in spirit to a faraway German hillside.

Scenic Lift Rides (Moonlight Ride) An autumn ski resort visit doesn’t have to be about fitting in every experience offered.  Sometimes it’s nice to just take a drive up the mountain and enjoy being together surrounded by quiet while riding the ski lift or tram to the peak and back.  Slow life down a bit and listen to the conversations the kids have as they take in everything they’re seeing around them.  For an even more special outing, watch for moonlight rides that often happen only during the few days surrounding each month’s full moon.

Spa Day Maybe getting sweaty on a mountain trail or whizzing down a mountain afraid for your life is not for everyone.  Is there ever a reason the family can’t divide up and let Mom spend an afternoon being pampered?  Ski resorts are well-known for providing world-class spa services to their snow-weary patrons.  The extra attention you can receive prior to the business of peak ski season promises to make your time relaxing even more refreshing.

Good Eats Spending time in the mountains will always work up an appetite.  Whether you’re hungry for a burger and fries, or looking for a meal more elegant and refined, resort restaurants are prepared to delight you.  Order a boxed picnic lunch to carry, grab a snack slope-side, or find a table by the window where you can enjoy breathtakingly majestic views and reflect on the beauty around you that is a ski resort in autumn!

An Outdoor Gear Giveaway

I'm excited to share with you this morning an outdoor gear giveaway being hosted by one of my new favorite companies.

What I love about this company is that they are supporting the dreamers-small entrepreneurs who have considered the problems they've encountered when they're outdoors having a good time, and come up with a solution to make the problem go away.  Each of the products is innovative. Garage Grown Gear has created a space to bring these products into one shopping space, and I think it's great!

Right now they are celebrating their 2nd birthday by offering a $500 prize pack giveaway. There are some really cool prizes and lots of runner-ups will win something, too. Click the image above to enter the giveaway today, and then take a look around. I'd love to know which products you think would be useful when you're getting the family outdoors!

Finally a Car Decal For Me (and You)!

I do not have a stick person family.  My kids are not all miniature mascots of our favorite sports team.  I do not need 6 of my husband's company logo in varying sizes representing my loved ones on the back widow of my car.  None of those things represent me.

I also have never gotten into the habit of purchasing abbreviated circular stickers for every place I've even visited/skiied/vacationed/dreamed about.  What happens when I no longer want my travelogue, all cracked and faded, driving down the road with me?

These are the two reasons I am so excited for the latest Kickstarter project from Glyphix Icons...

I do have an outdoor family!  We are skiiers, mountain bikers, runners.  We moved back to Utah because we are mountain people.  And I LOVE that our Glyphix icon represents that to anyone who sees it shining in the sun on the back of our truck.

What makes the Glyphix Icon decal better and different?
They're 3-dimensional & flexible.  Mine took about 3-seconds to apply and catches the eye from many different angles.
Made with a chrome metallic material that will keep them shiny and show-off worthy. Seriously, the shining blue mountain grabs my attention from clear across a parking lot.
15 outdoor passions to choose from including scuba, rock climbing, camping, and more. I can't wait to get the campfire decal and my husband is definitely getting one of the running or biking ones.

You will definitely want to check these out, but to do that, the Glyphix Icons team needs your help in backing their Kickstarter campaign.  Head over to check out how you can help for as little as $5 and watch for your outdoor decal to be coming in the mail!
