We're Officially Homeless

My boys and I moved out of our house yesterday.  We moved there 4 years ago with B as our only child.  Three kids later and we were bursting at the seams.  With my husband off to Alaska for his summer employment adventure, it's time for me to finally make good on the dream which has lived deep down inside of me for years.  We're going on an adventure!

That's right-we're not moving into someplace new...yet.  Instead, we've packed the minivan and are taking off on a 6-week cross-country road-trip, just me and my 4 boys.  I hope you'll come along with us!

Here are a few of the things we have planned (with a lot of unknown adventure in between):

Exploring close to home in Salt Lake and Park City

Respite in Wyoming at Little America
(you know I'm looking forward to doing that drive again...)

Our first annual cousin's conference in western Nebraska

LDS Church History Sites in Missouri

Driving The Great River Road down the Mississippi

Possible celebrity sighting in Louisiana?

Jaunt across to the Carolina beaches

Kitty Hawk for my kindergartner

Stops in Knoxville and Clarksville, TN

Nauvoo, IL, where our little family began

Across the top of Wyoming

Oregon Trail sights

Back to Utah by mid-July

I hope you'll come along with us!  And if you have ideas of great local activities anywhere along our way, we'd love to hear them!  There is an exciting summer coming!

It's Here!

Look what helped bring a little sunshine into our otherwise sad day yesterday...

Our new Coleman Instant 6 tent.
Time for first set-up?  1 minute 50 seconds.
This thing is going to be AWESOME this summer!

Come back Monday for a run-down on the 6-week road trip we're going to be taking!

Why I Love My State

If you've been hanging around with me for awhile, you know I LOVE living in Utah.  And if you're new here, it's probably still not that big of a secret.  Today I'm so excited to be guest posting in a feature called, "Why I Love My State" on State By State Travel .

I Love My State

I'd love for you to hop on over there to check it out, and tell them you're stopping by from A Local Wander!

Places Far, Far Away

One of the many blessings I count in my life is the opportunity I've had to do some overseas traveling.  Today I thought I'd share some brief thoughts on the foreign countries (and one self-governing commonwealth) that I've visited:

Leaning Tower of Pisa, Italy

Belgium-My senior English teacher docked me a point on a paper for typing the Grand Place instead of the Grand Palace. It really is Grand Place and I still want my point back.  Make sure to see the night-time laser light show!

France
Luxembourg-Teeny tiny, but beautiful.  You know the capital city and country are the same, right?  Making it officially Luxembourg, Luxembourg.

France-After two trips to Paris I can officially say I could care less about ever going back there.  The Normandy Coast and the French Riviera, however, are definitely worth repeat visits.

Netherlands-My paternal ancestry and I LOVE this country!!!

Canada-The thoroughfare for my multiple drives to and from Alaska. I'm still grateful for kind strangers 50km north of Edmonton who helped me change my flat tire.

Mexico-Anyone who tells me they're taking a Mexican Riviera cruise will probably never have to worry about me asking them for travel advice.

London, England
England-I haven't made it out of London, yet, but definitely on my list to go again.

Bermuda-A GREAT cruise destination because all the ports are on the same island.  Get off at the first one and rent a scooter for the rest of your stay.  You don't have to be on the ship when it moves-but know that the island is a little step back in time and all-night gas pumps may not be readily available...

Bahamas-Okay, this is a little cheating because I've only been on the beach Princess Cruises leases.
Guatemala-Does anyone have insight on how safe it is to travel independently here?  Not knowing, we were overly cautious.

Costa Rica-Definitely do the zip-lining.  I went 5 months pregnant.  My husband and I were the only English speakers and after listening to a 20-minute safety speech in Spanish we were told, "Hold here, don't touch here. Go!"

Panama-Traveling through the canal is amazing!  Tip for my LDS readers-the Panama LDS temple is viewable as you're entering/exiting the east end of the canal.

Puerto Rico-I mostly remember it being dirty.

Barcelona, Spain
Taiwan-This also should be considered a cheat, but a 10-hour over-night layover anywhere counts in my book.

Thailand-Go here!!  Get out of Bangkok right away.  I went north to Chiang Mai and did a jungle trek.  Next time I'll go south to Phuket and the beaches!

Malaysia-Aqua blue beaches, snake temples, and English architecture-a surprisingly interesting destination.

Singapore-As clean as the news reports lead you to believe.

Spain-Gaudi was such a freak!  A big-dreaming freak!

Australia-Really incredible-Perth was my absolute favorite.  Great opposite-side-of-the-road driving in Tasmania.

Cinque Terre, Italy
New Zealand-The mist in the fjords is worth getting up early for, but I'd spend the rest of my vacationing days on the north end of the north island if I could.

Tahiti-French-speaking and you'll REALLY benefit from being french-speaking, too.

Italy-Where to start?  Go here...that's all I can say.

Portugal-All the blue & white tiles in Lisbon-enchanting!

Albania-Such a sad looking country.  The fall of communism, the rise of capitalism, and now?  Deserted developments as far as the eye can see.

Croatia-Everything wonderful that, for me, Albania was not.

The Matterhorn, Switzerland
Switzerland-Idyllic and the greatest place to have family!

Gibraltar-Okay, the Rock of Gibraltar is a real place!  And at the top is a mess of wild monkeys. Totally awesome!

Do you have a story from any of these countries?

Travel Memories Saturday (Alaska)

My first day in Alaska, 1999.
This is Auk Bay, the only suburb of Juneau, a city reachable only by airplane or boat.
In less than a week my husband will be flying there to work for the summer.
We're excited for the opportunity, but also wondering
how it will work with the 5 others of us still down in the lower 48 wandering.
Wish us luck and stay tuned!

Where Have You Spread To?

I had a fabulous weekend trip back home to throw a baby shower for my sister and celebrate Mother's Day with my Mom.  Yesterday as brunch ended and we all went our separate ways in the restaurant parking lot, it struck me how neat it is that we've all branched out in different directions.  Here is my family's current breakdown of home locales...

3 sisters still call Iowa home

My parents are based in Iowa
but have recently called both Alabama and Joplin, MO home
as part of their disaster relief mission work.

I'm in Utah falling more and more in love everyday.

One sister is in Western Nebraska.

One sister is in New Mexico.

I'm curious, where is your family living now?

I should tell you about my husband's family, too!
10 siblings, plus his parents are still right here in Utah.
1 brother is in Pennsylvania,
1 brother in San Diego,
and 1 brother in Manila, Phillipines.
(Can't wait to go visit them!)

Road-Trip Ramblings #2: Driving Through Wyoming is Really, REALLY Boring! (And a few things to break up the monotony)

When an Iowa-girl meets and marries a Utah-boy, it's inevitable that the two of them are going to make the drive back and forth every once in awhile.  I think in 11 years I've made the trek more than 25 times.  Trust me, very little of this 1000-mile section of I-80 is very interesting!  About a year ago my sister moved to western Nebraska and I'm so excited to have somebody else out here "in the west" with me, but after visiting her there three separate times, I'm ready to scream from the mountaintops that Wyoming is really, REALLY boring!

This is Wyoming...
A Local Wander
Seriously, even the shape of Wyoming is boring.
I'm not exaggerating, this is traced straight out of my Rand McNally Atlas.
At least 49% of the people who visited Wyoming in 2012 focused their entire trip on this one corner of the state...
A Local Wander
That would be Yellowstone National Park.
Three other top visited places are within a short driving distance from there.
Unfortunately, I-80 does not go anywhere close to there...
A Local Wander
(an approximate drawing)
Let me take you along the longest of 5 hour drives.  (I will say one nice thing about driving through Wyoming:  the major towns are all equally spread apart at about 100 miles.  It does make it easier to envision how long until your next reprieve) Here we go...

    Evanston to Green River/Rock Springs

A Local Wander
With Utah as my starting/stopping point, this section is pretty much a throw away for me.  Either we're barely on the road so it's still exciting, or we're almost off the road so we're only thinking about finally getting there.  There are two things to note, however...

  1. Little America-An AWESOME Oasis of Green in the middle of nowhere.  I'm going to write about it more in a separate post, so for now know it's a gas station/play area/restaurant/hotel stop thriving where nothing else is living.
  2. The Green River Tunnel.  I-80 crosses the bluff above Green River and you have to go through this tunnel to get to the other side.  A Greyhound driver once told me he saw a compact car literally blown off the road from winds coming down the canyon on the west end.  I've experienced the strong winds a handful of times and will add my testimony that this is definitely a place to exercise perfect 10 & 2 on the wheel.
     Rock Springs to Rawlins

A Local Wander
Brown, brown, brown, brown, brown, train, train, brown, brown, brown...You get the picture.  When you finally do get to Rawlins look north of the highway for a small conglomeration of horse and llama corrals.  They really will make you feel for a second like you're in cowboy country.  Also watch for the Kermit the Frog house.  You'll know it when you see it.

If you have time to leave the freeway in Rawlins, I highly recommend venturing up to a place called Martin's Cove.  There is a visitor's center operated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and opportunity to experience hiking like the Mormon Pioneers did back in the 1800's.

     Rawlins to Laramie

A Local Wander

There is nothing more disconcerting than coming up on a section of interstate temporarily closed due to severe winter weather. And something very eerie about being the first car through the crossing gates when the road reopens. If it is going to happen while you're driving across Wyoming, odds are pretty good it's going to be on this particular stretch of the highway.  I have been in white-out blizzards here as late as Memorial Day and even when the weather is warmer, wind and fog can be a major hazard.  On my recent drive, in fact, this is the only place I encountered snow.  What is there to see along here, then?  Impressive miles and miles of snow fencing.

     Laramie to Cheyenne

A Local Wander

The good news about Laramie (if you're traveling east) is that it's the beginning of the end of your drive through Wyoming.  The distance from there to Cheyenne is only about 45 miles and after what you've been through, it goes so quickly!  In addition, there are actually a few interesting things to see...
  1. Medicine Bow National Forest-there is a REALLY steep climb east of Laramie that takes you out of the brown through a red rock canyon up into an evergreen forest.  It is such a treat on the eyes!  In winter the snow on the side of the roads can be higher than your car, though, so be careful.  Also, I've rarely made it through this stretch without some kind of heavy fog impeding me.
  2. Most people would never put Wyoming and Abraham Lincoln in the same sentence, but here he is right on the side of the road immortalized in stone at the Abraham Lincoln Memorial Monument.
  3. And just for something strange, there is a monument in the interstate median with a tree growing out of a boulder.  I've never stopped because it's in a very odd place, but you should.  It seems like something interesting.  Now that I think about it, it's pretty amazing they didn't destroy it during the construction of I-80 on either side.

Cheyenne to Pine Bluff (Nebraska Border)
A Local Wander
Whether the end or the beginning,
you'll be excited to finally be here!
It's all back to normal driving now.  If you're just coming into Wyoming, it's pretty exciting to just FINALLY be out of Nebraska.  And if you're on your way out of Wyoming, you're singing the praises (which won't last long if you're now heading across all of Nebraska) of dropping down onto the western plains with new scenery coming up ahead.

Obviously I write a little tongue-in-cheek, and the other parts of Wyoming I've traveled to are absolutely beautiful and interesting.  But, I'll tell you, I don't look forward to making the exact same trip again the next time!

Where is that section of road you could do without ever driving again?
